A JOSEPHINE BAKER SIGNED LETTER dated November 1, 1938 on deckled Le Beau Chene stationary. Addressed to her sister Meg. Inscribed in pen at bottom Your Josephine. 8.25 x 10.5 inches. Translated as: My dear Meg, Thank you for your adorable note. Ultimately I cannot rejoice with you at the news, because it is not true! Indeed, it is something that Maurice Chevalier dropped at the dress rehearsal at the Casino, and the whole press naturally jumped on it. It was just a joke he wanted to play on me, and it worked remarkably well because I have been receiving countless congratulations that really touch me while they also make me sad, because they are groundless! And you know, my dear Meg, what boundless joy I would feel if only it were true! And instead of all that happines, I am feverishly getting ready to go on a tour, with a first show in Copenhagen next week. Of course I have a lot of work and not a second to myself. All the contracts have been postponed or even cancelled because of those awful war rumors that alarmed us so much, but with appeasement everything was on again, and now it all has to be done so fast! So it's goodbye, my dear Meg, and please don't forget to give my regards to your husband, and for you, here's a fat kiss from your Josephine.
