Charles Leickert can be ranked among the most gifted nineteenth-century Dutch Romantic painters. His interest in painting winter scenes developed under Andreas Schelfhout, who became his teacher in 1839. He adopted Schelfhout's bright light, polished technique and low horizon. By the 1850s Leickert had settled in Amsterdam and increasingly developed his own style. Though most of his landscapes were executed in his studio, Leickert was eager to respect the rules of 'truth' (waarheid) and 'naturalness' (natuurlijkheid). Indeed his compositions were based on sketches of nature, which were then freely interpreted as a means of expressing his own creative ability. The vision of a peaceful and 'golden' Holland, increasingly at odds with modern realities, gained wide popularity in the 1840s and 1850s. Focusing on this nostalgic ideal, Leickert's summer and winter landscapes were enthusiastically received.
