Lot 191
A PAIR OF INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICONS OF CHRIST AND THE MOTHER OF GOD ENTHRONED. Comprising two matching icons executed entirely in shaded enamel within ogee arch reserves. On the left, Christ is depicted as the Great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14), here Christ is shown dressed as a bishop with miter, crown and omofor; he delivers a blessing with his right hand and holds an open book of gospels revealing the text from John 13:34, his ornate throne displaying the symbols of the four evangelists. The foreground of chased silver and the background of turquoise blue cloisonné enamel. The border of frame with floral forms in shaded enamel on a stippled gilt ground and cabochon embellishments. On the right, a similarly rendered image of the enthroned Mother of God, upon her lap, the infant Christ delivering a blessing. Both bear the hallmark for the city of Yaroslavl, 84 silver standard and the Christ with presumably the maker's initials NP, 20th century. 9 inches x 5.6 inches (23 x 14.4 cm) each.
