A LARGE AND IMPORTANT RUSSIAN ICON OF THE OLD TESTAMENT TRINITY, CIRCA 1700.  This icon depicts the Trinity as the three angels who appeared to the Patriarch Abraham at the Oak of Mamre, as recorded in chapter 18 of the book of Genesis. While not generally distinguished some understood the angels as thus: Christ at center, above whom is the tree, signifying the wood of the cross, the Father at left, before a building symbolizing the church, the Holy Spirit on the right, below a hill signifying spiritual ascent. In an excellent state of preservation. The upper border inscribed in abbreviated Old Church Slavonic and identifying the subject as SVYATAYA TROITSA "The Holy Trinity". 32.5 inches x 26.26 inches (82.5 cm x 66.8 cm).
