Lot 329
A RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT JOHN THE FORERUNNER, 18TH CENTURY. In this full-length depiction of John, he is shown wearing a hair shirt (vlasyanitsa) highlighted in gold. He delivers a blessing with his right hand and holds an open scroll which is inscribed with the text adapted from John 1:29 “I saw and witnessed concerning him, behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sins of the world.” The Slavonic inscription flanking his head reads “The Holy John the Forerunner”. The large size of this icon and John’s right facing posture would surely suggest that this icon was once installed on the Deisis tier of an Iconostas immediately to the right of Christ enthroned. 41.25 inches x 16 inches (104.8 x 41 cm).
