A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL, 18TH CENTURY. A large and colorful rendering depicting Michael as the chief captain of the heavenly armies, crowned and riding upon a winged horse, a rainbow extends over his head. A lance is in one hand and a censer and book in the other, a long horn extends from his mouth. He is shown here defeating Satan, who has fallen at the base beside tumbled buildings in an abyss. At upper right, Christ Emmanuel before the Hetimasia, the prepared altar which is also the symbolic throne of Christ. The upper margin inscribed in red, with the title for this icon identifying him as "The image of the Holy Arkhistrategos Archangel Michael." 17.1 inches 14.6 inches (43.5 x 37 cm).
