A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE VIRGIN ORANS, CIRCA 1890. This icon is modeled after the famous six meter high mosaic located over the central aspe in the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kiev, Ukraine. The embroidered handkerchief on the belt of the Virgin is popularly thought to be for wiping away the tears of those who come before her with their problems and concerns. 10.5 inches x 8.6 inches (26.7 x 22 cm).
