The offered lot follows closely the painting of the same subject held by the National Gallery in London and formerly ascribed to the Master of Moulins, who it is now generally agreed, was the artist Jean Hey. The painting depicts a story related to the parents of the Virgin Mary- Joachim and Anne. Joachim had been expelled from the temple because he had not had children during twenty years of marriage. Believing himself to be cursed by God, he sought shelter among shepherds. Then an angel visited him. Anne did not know why Joachim had gone away and was worried by his absence. An angel appeared to her, telling her to go meet her husband. When they returned together, Mary was conceived. This later depiction or pastiche differs from the original in that the figure of Charlemagne has been moved to the left of Anne and Joachim. The original panel is believed to have been the left wing of a larger triptych with the figure of Charlemagne being turned inward in an attitude of supplication towards the central panel subject, presumably the Virgin, in keeping with the theme of the left wing.
