A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CARVED MOTHER OF PEARL STAR OF BETHLEHEM ICON, PALESTINE, FIRST HALF 20TH CENTURY. At center on a mosaic mother of pearl field, the scene of the Nativity of Christ and the Adoration of the Shepherds comprised of 15 individually carved mother of pearl figures including the Virgin, St. Joseph, the infant Christ, the shepherds and various animals. The border encircled with 16 stepped mother of pearl laminated and carved star points and the interior arch displays the Latin inscription "Here is He who is born of the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ." comprised of individually carved mother of pearl letters. Diameter 31.3 inches (79.7 cm).
