A PRINTED LATIN BIBLE, HIERONYMUS FROBEN, BASEL 1538.  Containing both the Old and New Testaments, 15 inches x 10 inches (38 x 25.5 cm). The New Testament divider page or frontis emblazoned with the Froben caduceus-styled publishing house logo designed by Hans Holbein the Younger beneath the printed Latin text NOVUM TESTAMENTUM OMNE EX VERSIONE UTRAQUE HOC EST DES ERASMI Roterodami, & Vulgata, BASILE AE ANNO M.D. XXXVIII. The names of presumed various owners are inscribed in different places including that of John Redman Coxe (1773-1864) an American physician, writer and educator. The front board covered in tooled skin, the spine and back board lacking skin covering. While overall it appears to be mostly intact the frontis piece is presumably missing and the margins exhibit water staining throughout and some pages (primarily towards the back) are stuck together.

Hieronymus Froben (1501-1563) was the oldest son of famous printer and publisher Johann Froben (1460-1527). Hieronymus, along with his father and brother-in-law Nicolaus Episcopius were pioneering printers in Basel known for their close working relationship with Erasmus of Rotterdam on whose translation this offered lot is based.
