Inscribed on base "LOUIS BOTTEE" and dated "88" and with Susse Frères, Paris foundry stamp. Shield inscribed "VOICI TON MAITRE IL LEST LE FUT OU LE DOIT ETRE."

The inscription on the shield is taken from a well-known couplet composed by Voltaire titled "Inscription pour une statue de l'Amour" (Inscription for a Statue of Love). In its complete form it reads, Whoever you are, here is your master [Love] he is, was, or should be [your master].
