Lot 25
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE OLD TESTAMENT TRINITY, MSTERA, CIRCA 1900. At center, three Angels are seated at a table, in the background a tree; building, and hill are depicted. With these simple elements Russian iconography symbolically depicts the Trinity as the three angels who appeared to the Patriarch Abraham at the Oak of Mamre, as recorded in chapter 18 of the book of Genesis. Russians generally do not distinguish the three persons of the Trinity in the type by inscription, though some understand them thus: Christ as the angel depicted at the center of the table. Above Him is the tree which symbolizes the wood of the cross. God the Father as the angel seated at the left, before a building signifying the church. The Holy Spirit as the angel on the right, below a hill symbolizing spiritual ascent. Some early examples of this composition give the central angel the specific cross-halo of Christ the Son, a practice forbidden by the Stoglav Council in the 16th century. The upper border is inscribed with an abbreviated title written, STAYA TROTSA, “The Holy Trinity.” This subject is often used to represent Pentecost (Trinity Sunday) in icons depicting the twelve major feast days of the year. The borders depict family saints, Saint Evdokia (left) and the female Martyr Saint Alenia (right). 12.5 inches x 10.25 inches (31.7 x 26 cm).
