By tradition once owned by the Roman Catholic Bishop Henrich Forster (1799-1881). A noted orator and stanch defender of Catholicism, Forster was the bishop of Breslau and was deposed during the Kulturkamp in Germany. Before sentence was imposed he moved to the Bohemian part of the diocese where he remained the acting prince-bishop.
Albert Kornek was born in Breslau, Germany and went on to a distinguishing career as painter of historical and religious genre as well as society portraits. His works are found in numerous private and public collections. He was a student of both the Berlin Academy as well as the Dusseldorf Academy. As depicted in the offered painting, he was known for large and impressive works drawing on Italian Renaissance styles and fashions.
