A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE GUARDIAN ANGEL, CIRCA 1800. At center, a full length figure of the Guardian Angel holding a cross and sword and standing atop stylized clouds. Above him, the New Testament Trinity together with the Mother of God and John the Forerunner, and the symbols of the four Evangelists beneath a gathering of angels, including the Archangel Michael and Gabriel. To the left and right of the main figure are scenes showing the life and death of a pious man, at left he spends his time in moderation, in prayer and meditation on Holy Scripture, and in the right lower corner when he dies, his soul is received by an angel and is carried as an infant to Christ. In contrast, at lower left is depicted a desolate man who sleeps and drinks his life away, urged on by a demon seen beneath him, and when he dies an angel carries his record, as recorded on a scroll, of his evil deeds to Christ. The borders with narratives describing the scenes and the lower margin inscribed with a prayer to the Guardian Angel. 10.5 inches x 8.8 inches (26.6 x 22.3 cm).
