A PATINATED BRONZE MOUNTED BUST OF DOCTOR CARL THIERSCH (1822-1895) LEIPZIG, CIRCA 1890.  Finely sculpted in full round engraved on front panel Carl Thiersch and on verso, published by (Verlag von) C.B. Lorck-Leipzig, and mounted on a polished rouge marble plinth. Overall height 19.3 inches (49.5 cm).

Dr. Carl Thiersch was a German surgeon born in Munich where he later received a doctorate from the University of Munich and served as a prosector of pathological anatomy. He was also a military surgeon during the First War of Schleswig and a medical consultant during the Franco-Prussian War. He is credited with the modification of the antiseptic sterilization technique. Thiersch is also associated with “Thiersch’s graft,” a method of split-skin grafting he developed, which is still used today. Carl Berendt Lorck (1814-1905) was a Danish-German bookseller, typographer and publisher. Lorck is well known as the publisher of Scandanavian literature in Germany as well as the co-founder of the Leipzig Illustrirte Zeitung newspaper.
