A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE SILVERED BRONZE SHIELD OF FRANCESCO I DE MEDICI, 19TH CENTURY, AFTER THE ORIGINAL BY BENVENUTO CELLINI (ITALIAN 1500-1571). At center of the concave form shield a high relief sculpted image of the head of Medusa. Immediately above in a low relief sculpted roundel is the scene of David slaying Goliath and immediately below, Judith placing the head of Holofernes in a bag. On the left a portrait of Bianca Capello and interspersed throughout, various other warriors and military motifs. Finely crafted with a high degree of detail and verso with integral suspension device. Length 29.75 inches (76 cm), width 19.5 inches (49.5 cm).

The original shield from which the offered lot is modeled is now housed in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, Germany.
