A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION, CIRCA 1890. At center, Christ stands victorious over death, atop the tomb stone while two angels of the Lord look on. Overlaid with an elaborate repoussé and machine engraved silver and gold plated metal riza with attached cloisonné enameled halos, the lower margin with engraved cartouche inscribed "The Resurrection of Christ." 14.25 inches x 12.4 inches (36 x 31.5 cm).

The offered lot reflects the style of those generally associated with icons produced in the higher quality workshops in and around Moscow. Such icons not only drew heavily on old traditional styles, but in reinterpretations of the old style, as well as contemporary Western European works. As such, one can see the influence of numerous artists in the offered lot, such as Nesterov, Brullov and even the Danish painter, Carl Bloch.
