A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE KORSUN-EPHESUS MOTHER OF GOD, PROBABLY LATE 18TH CENTURY/EARLY 19TH CENTURY. Finely painted with a great deal of detail, the Mother of God and the infant Christ child are depicted here in a cheek to cheek embrace with the Christ child holding a scroll, symbol of his wisdom. According to legend, in the year 1239 the original Korsun icon was carried by the young bride of Prince Alexander Nevski for her wedding which took place in the town of Toropets where it remained in the same chapel until the year 1917. 14.75 inches x 12 inches (37.2 x 30.4 cm).
