Both Gaspare Fossati and his brother, Giuseppe were well-known architects and designers who lent their services both to the Imperial Russian court and the Sultan Abdul Mejid, who hired them to carry out major restorations on the historic Hagia Sophia cathedral/mosque, Constantinople, in 1847. After the completion of their work in 1852 a group of lithographs were published depicting images of the newly remodeled interior and exterior of Hagia Sophia based on the original watercolors executed by the Fossati brothers, of which the offered paintings are undoubtedly related.
