Comparison:

See Claude Aguttes Auctioneers, Paris, Sale of May 18, 2011, lot 247, a similarly decorated and sized panel signed A. Gargiulo, which sold for $10,917.00. And Sotheby’s New York, Sale of April 14, 2008, lot 566, an inlaid marquetry table signed A. Gargiulo, which sold for $55,000.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, there existed many workshops in the region of Sorrento and Mantua specializing in the centuries old tradition of inlaying fine wood and straw marquetry. Perhaps no other workshop brought the art of marquetry to such a zenith as did that operated by the Gargiulo family which was established in the year 1863 and is still in existence today.
