Compare the angel in the proceeding lot (St. Joseph and the infant Christ) with the angel in the left foreground of Knaus’ painting of the Holy Family in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Ludwig Knaus was a German genre painter of the younger Düsseldorf School. He was born at Wiesbaden and studied from 1845 to 1852 under Shon and Schadow in Düsseldorf. He studied and worked in Paris from 1852-1860 winning notoriety and two gold medals and during that time also took a one year leave to paint in Italy. From 1861 to 1866 he was actively painting in Berlin where he would later become a professor at the academy (1874-1883) working until his death in Berlin in 1910. The offered lot was no doubt the main image above a Marian altar as the proceeding lot was most certainly the main image devoted to St. Joseph both commonly found on either side of the main altar.
