While best known as one of America’s preeminent painters of sporting scenes, Ripley was also an accomplished portraitist as clearly illustrated by the offered lot.  A portrait sketch by Ripley of the same sitter signed and dated 1931 and ascribed to “Mrs. North Ringling”, was offered at Skinner’s Boston, May 10, 2002 auction, lot 314.
