A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE NATIVITY AND RELATED SCENES, PROBABLY 19TH CENTURY IN THE 17TH CENTURY STYLE. In this complex and ornate rendering, the entire nativity narrative is illustrated including the Annunciation to the Shepherds, the Birth of Christ, the Adoration of the Magi, the Flight into Egypt and the Massacre of the Innocents to name a few. The margins are overlaid with an ornately chased gilt metal basma with engraved and shaped title plaque applied at top center inscribed in Old Church Slavonic "The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ." Such icons are often ascribed to the Strogonov or Yarosavl style or school. 12.75 inches x 11 inches (32 cm x 27.5 cm).
