A SCARCE SOVIET PROPAGANDA CUP AND SAUCER, SERGEI CHEKHONIN, STATE PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY, 1921. After the design by Sergei Chekhonin (1878-1936) “Woman and Devil” with hand painted image of a nude woman reclining on a devil by decorator Ekaterina Nikolaevna Bol’sheva (signed with initials). Underside of cup with Imperial Cypher for Alexander III and dated 1890, the saucer with the Imperial Cypher for Nicholas II and dated 1903. Both pieces inscribed in Cyrillic “After the design by Chekhonin” and the decorators initials, the date 1921, and the hammer, sickle and cog (see illustration). Saucer diameter 6 inches (15.2 cm), cup height 3 inches (7.6 cm).
