Oil on panel
18.25 inches x 51 inches (46.5 cm x 129.5 cm)
Estimate:  $15,000 - 20,000   € 11,100 - 14,800
Price Realized: $18,000.00

The offered lot is undoubtedly a predella panel belonging to a presently untraced altarpiece. At center, Christ delivers a blessing with his right hand while his left hand rests on an orb with cross finial symbolic of the cosmos of which he is the supreme ruler. Above his head in Gothic script 'Alpha et O[mega]', taken from the book of Revelation 1:8, “ I am the Alpha and the Omega says the Lord, Who Is, Who Was, and Who Is To Come, the Almighty.” Christ is flanked by the Apostles, each displaying their respective attributes.
On stylistic grounds, the painting is datable to the last decade of the 15th century. Ulm or Nördlingen are potential points of origin for this work. Ulm in particular was one of the high capitals of Late Gothic art, a center for the production of large altarpieces and the home of numerous artists, amongst them the best masters in Swabia.
