The noted Danish painter Paul Gustav Fischer is best known for his depictions of life in Copenhagen which often capture a moment of everyday life in the picturesque city, as is illustrated in the offered lot. Fischer became successful as an artist with images such as these, though he had already achieved success as an illustrator. His father had also tried his hand at painting, but eventually found success in a related business – the manufacturing of paints and lacquers. Fischer exhibited his works numerous times at Charlottenborg's spring exhibition and several times abroad, including the salon in Paris where he traveled to study impressionism, which greatly influenced his work. After his stay in Paris, the colors he so artfully used became richer and lighter, as seen in the offered painting.  It was also around this time that Fischer’s notoriety grew exponentially, due in no small part to his exquisite mix of light, shadows and bright colors.
