            Lot 415
AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD JOY TO ALL WHO SUFFER, WITH COINS, CIRCA 1890. This icon type originated in a miracle that took place in the village of Klochka, near St. Petersburg, not far from a glass factory, in the year 1888. A standard image of the Joy to All Who Suffer was hanging in a chapel that was struck by lightning, which shattered the alms box and charred the walls. The icon Joy to All Who Suffer was found face down with coins sticking to the surface and had brightened which was seen as a sign from heaven. While it is not uncommon to find examples with coins painted on the surface it is less common to find actual ½ kopek coins inlaid such as in the offered lot. The inscription on the lower margin states that this is a true likeness of the same icon which was discovered on July 23, 1888 in the chapel near the Glass factory. 16.75 inches x 13 inches (42.5 x 33 cm).
