Gerrit Dou, also known as Gerard and Douw or Dow, was a Dutch Golden Age painter whose small, highly-polished paintings are typical of the Leiden Fijnschilders. The Leiden Fijnschilders or Fijnschilders (literally “fine-painters”) flourished from about 1630-1710 and strove to create as natural reproduction of reality as possible in their meticulously executed, often small-scale works. Among one of the most successful of these “fine painters” was Gerrit Dou who is particularly well-known for his “niche” painting, such as the offered lot.
