A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE APOSTLE ST. MARK, CIRCA 1700.Here the writer of the second Gospel is seated with an open book resting in his lap and upon which is inscribed the beginning of his own Gospel, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.” Most likely once part of a set of Evangelists from a pair of Royal doors and clearly echoing the Moscow Armory School style. 16 inches x 13 inches (40.6 x 33 cm).
