A LARGE HOWARD STERLING CO. THREE-HANDLED PRESENTATION TYG (CUP), CIRCA 1900.Of squat baluster form raised on beaded pedestal with engraved J.L. monogram and inscription “Presented to Dr. Justus Ohage in grateful appreciation of his services to humanity, August 1, 1901, by the people of St. Paul.” Stamped “Sterling, 100x, 8 pints,” and maker’s marks. Weight 52.37 troy ounces. Height 11 inches (28 cm).

Dr. Justus Ohage performed American’s first successful gall bladder surgery at St. Joseph’s hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1886. Dr. Ohage was the St. Paul City Commissioner of Health from 1899 to 1907. Ohage had enlisted in the New Jersey Volunteers in the Civil War. At the age of 15, he was the youngest soldier in the army of the Potomac. He was visited by Abraham Lincoln in the Army hospital after he was wounded.
