A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE FINDING IN THE TEMPLE, 19TH CENTURY, MOSCOW WORKSHOP.   Here Christ is seen seated in the temple, surrounded by learned men and reading from scripture, open to Isaiah 61. His parents, Mary and Joachim are depicted looking on after having just found their missing son in this peculiar circumstance.  This type is usually known by the title PREPOLOVENIE, which literally means, "The Middle". In this case the middle between Easter and the Day of Pentecost, the fourth week after Easter. The style of this icon draws on 17th century iconography but is clearly of the type produced by the Palekh and Mstera trained painters working in the revivalist style in Moscow at the turn of the century. 15.75 inches x 14.2 inches (40 x 36 cm).
