A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE POKROV MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. This icon combines two subjects, the Holy Fool (Blazhennuiy) André, who saw the Mother of God within the church of the Blachernae at Constantinople, and Romanos the Melodist (sladkopyevets), who could not sing well until the Mother of God came to him in a dream and gave him a scroll to eat, thereby granting him the gift of song. Here the Mother of God is depicted at the top center on a cloud within the church holding her protective mantle (pokrov) in her outstretched arms over the congregation below. She is encircled by the seven archangels and further accompanied by a gathering of various saints and immediately above her is Christ Immanuel. Below at center stands Romanos the Melodist. To the right of Romanos the Holy Fool André raises his arm toward the Mother of God, showing her to his disciple Epifany. To the right further still, the Mother of God appearing to Romanos in his sleep, feeding him a scroll. To the left the Patriarch of Constantinople and behind him the Emperor Leo and Empress Theophano. Overlaid with a silvered repousse metal riza with spurious hallmarks. 21 inches x 16.5 inches (53.3 x 41 cm).
