A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE EXTENDED DEISIS, PALEKH, 19TH CENTURY.  At center, the enthroned Christ delivers a blessing and holds an open book of Gospels to Matthew 11:28. He is flanked by the Mother of God and John the Forerunner, forming the Deisis. Also gathered around the Savior, the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the Apostles Peter, Paul and John, St. Nicholas, the Holy Martyr George, the Holy Martyr Paraskeva, St. Savaty and St. Zosima. At the center of the upper margin within an ogee arch reserve is the Lord Sabaoth amidst typical Palekh style clouds. Together with an ornate silvered repousse and chased riza with gilded haloes and highlights (not shown). 12.1 inches x 10.6 inches (30.7 x 27 cm).
