A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE THREE HIERARCHS, NEVYANSK, 19TH CENTURY. Depicted here are three full length images of St. Gregory the Theologian, Saint Basil the Great and St. John Chrysostom. Each is attired in bishop’s robes, and each delivers a blessing and holds a book of Gospels symbolic of their knowledge and teaching authority. Saint Basil is considered the father of the Orthodox communal monasticism, Gregory was a great poet and orator and John was known for his eloquent homilies, hence his name (Chrysostom) which means golden mouth. The usual Orthodox Sunday liturgy is the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. 17.5 inches x 14.75 inches (44.3 x 37 cm).
