Lot 257
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ENTRANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD INTO THE TEMPLE, CIRCA 1825.  A finely painted icon stylistically of the type associated with the various higher end icon studios in St. Petersburg circa 1775-1850 and producing what author Oleg Tarasov referred to as Frankish style icons. At left, the parents of Mary, Joakim and Anna, present their daughter to the temple priest Zakharias, father of St. John the Forerunner. In the background a gathering of three candle- bearing virgins, an element said to be a borrowing from the Western celebration of candlemas. The large size and rectangular shape would suggest the offered icon was once part of the festival tier of a small iconostasis. 13.5 inches x 20.25 inches (34.3 x 51.4 cm).
Estimate:  $1,200 - 1,800   € 924 - 1,386
