AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE JOY TO ALL WHO SORROW MOTHER OF GOD, ST. PETERSBURG, 1840. At center, encircled by a garland of roses linked by beads, the crowned Virgin cradles the infant Christ, and both hold prayer beads as winged cherubs look on. At top center, God the Father and the outer borders with 14 oval reserves painted with various saints, clockwise from upper right they are: The Holy Fool Vasilliy, The Holy Martyr Eustathius, the Holy Martyr Mamontes, The Holy Martyr Justin, The River Jordan, The Burning Bush, The Holy Martyr George, The Holy Martyr Christopher, The Holy Martyr Leonti, The Holy Prince Dmitri, The Holy Princess Theodora, The Venerable John, the Holy Bishop Gregory and The Holy Bishop Ignatius. The lower central margin with oval inscribed in Slavonic, "A true likeness of the image of the Most Holy Mother of God 'Of All Who Suffer,' which is kept in St. Petersburg in the Church at the Resurrection Bridge." The borders overlaid with a silver gilt repousse and chased frame, hallmarked St. Petersburg, dated 1840 and with Cyrillic makers mark DA for Dmitri Andreev. 10.75 inches x 9 inches (27 x 23 cm).

The Resurrection (Voskresenie) Bridge was a kind of floating bridge in St. Petersburg that was replaced by another bridge (Suvorov) begun in 1824, and finally by the Permanent bridge which was begun in 1897 and completed in 1903. The bridge is now called the Trinity (Troitskiy) Bridge.
