A SCARCELY ENCOUNTERED RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CONSOLATION IN GRIEF AND SORROWS MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. The prototype of this icon can be traced to the Vatoped Monastery on Mt. Athos. In 1863 in was brought to Russian by Hieromonk Paissy where it began to work miracles. At top center in an arched reserve is the Mother of God flanked by John the Baptist and the Apostle John. Below is a gathering of saints including St. George (left) and St. Dmitrius (right). The gilt borders ornately incised. 12.25 inches x 14 inches (31 x 35.7cm).
