AN IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN CHALICE, DATED 1763. The large scalloped domed base highly repoussed and chased with a border of winged cherubs and floral forms. Up further still, interspersed between scrolling ribbons, fruit, and floral forms, 3 cartouches each repoussed with a scene from the Passion of Christ, and surmounted with an Imperial crown. The scenes include: Pontious Pilate Washing His Hands, The Mocking of Christ, and Christ Carrying His Cross. The central bulbous node chased with cherubim and supporting an intricate pierced repousse and chased basketwork frame displaying the Deisis image, Seraphim, and an eight-sided cross, holding a gilded cup. The underside of base inscribed in Slavonic "Ivan Zolotar and his wife Iuliana gave this chalice to the church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, year 1763 month of August on the 21st day." Presumably silver but unmarked. Height 11.75 inches (29.8 cm).
