Red Mediterranean coral was found in abundance off the coast of Sicily and the Sicilian City of Trapani became a center of coral craftsmanship from the 15th century to the 18th century at a time when it was one of the larger Mediterranean ports and a leading artistic center. In ancient mythology, coral was held to be created from blood spilling from the severed head of Medusa. In later Christian times, it symbolized the blood of Christ and it was long held to have an apotropaic value, often being worn around the necks of children to ward off evil.
