A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE ITALIAN GLAZED TERRA COTTA OF THE VIRGIN AND CHILD, 19TH CENTURY.  In the style of Della Robia, sculpted in half round upon an integral arched plaque, a waist up depiction of the Virgin cradling the infant Christ who holds a scroll inscribed in Latin with gilt letters EGO SUM LUX MUNDI (I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD) and on the base in Latin, "This is the servant who received wtih humility the Lord." Signed with underglazed rooster on base and impressed with the CANTAGALLI factory mark. Verso with hanger. Height 34.75 inches x 24 inches (88.3 x 61 cm).

The Cantagalli workshop was founded as early as 1494 and effectively re-founded in 1878. The later founder's son is noted to have devoted much of his time to study a technique style and history of Italian pottery and was well regarded fellow scholars. William De Morgan is known to have visited the Cantagalli workshops during his visits to Florence.
