A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF CHRIST THE LORD ALMIGHTY, END OF THE 18TH CENTURY.  Here Christ is depicted in the standard waist up image delivering a blessing and holding an open book of Gospels to Matthew 11:28, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…" The head of Christ with the distinct halo of an overlaying cross form and inscribed with the Greek words, HO ON, meaning "Who Is" as found in the book of Revelation (1:8) and given as a title of God in Exodus 3:14. The medallions at upper left and right inscribed with the Greek abbreviation IC XC for Iisus Khristos – Jesus Christ.  The shoulder height inscription identifies the subject in Old Church Slavonic as, Gospod Vsederzhitel – The Lord Almighty. Finely painted on a gold leaf ground and with gold highlights on Christ’s outer garment.  13.25 inches x 10.5 inches (33.8 x 26.6 cm).
