A VERY FINE FRENCH DIEPPE CARVED AND ARTIST SIGNED IVORY PLAQUE OF A SATYR AND YOUNG NUDE BEAUTY, LAST HALF 19TH CENTURY, PIERRE ADRIEN GRAILLION (FRENCH 1809-1872). Depicted in very well carved detail and good anatomy with the figure of a satyr with animated expression kneeling beside a reclining nude young woman. Inscribed lower right "Graillion" and contained in a tooled gilt bronze bezel within a square ebonized hardwood frame. The verso with typed paper label inscribed "Given to John J. Cook by Larry Daymont American Embassy, Paris 1939." Ivory diameter 4 inches (10 cm), 7.75 inches (17.3 cm) square overall.

Born in Dieppe, France, Graillion studied art in school learning to work in ivory, alabaster, terracotta, wood and clay. He also was a painter. He is best known for his sympathetic reliefs of the working people of Dieppe which won him enormous acclaim throughout Europe and was awarded the Legion of Honor by Napolean III in 1858.
