A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RELIEF CARVED AND PARTIAL GILT FRUITWOOD PLAQUE OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD, ITALIAN, 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY. Finely carved in high relief from a single panel the infant Christ contemplates scripture while held in the lap of his mother, depicted together in a gilded arched reserve carved with garlands of holly suspended from iron rings. The upper corners carved with winged cherub heads and the borders carved with a repeating pattern of half flower head forms. Inscribed lower left Opus Donatello. 25.25 inches x 18 inches (64 x 46 cm).
