The Martyrdom of Crusader Knights-1721
Oil on canvas

Estimate:
$3,000 - 5,000
Little is known about the talented painter of historical genre who signed his paintings "E. Richard." It would seem he was known by the court based on a large and impressive portrait he executed of Queen Elizabeth Christine of Prussia (1715-1797) wife of Frederick the Great. And there are a number of known paintings, perhaps a series to which this painting belonged, that portray various ceremonies depicting knight crusaders. There are also examples or religious and mythological genre by E. Richard as well and all dated between the years 1719-1737.
The offered lot would seem to depict the moment in which the souls of two crusader knights are taken to heaven by angels as they are burned at the stake presumably for not denying Christ to their adversaries who appear to be dressed and outfitted in "Arab" attire. The astonished look on the faces of the bystanders would suggest that the knights are retrieved both body and soul from the flames beneath them as the angel on the left presents the martyrs crown and palm to the victim.
