Lot 304A
A VERY FINE FRENCH CARVED WALNUT AND GILT MOUNTED HOLY WATER FONT, CIRCA 1860. The shield form walnut plaque with scroll and acanthus carved borders and arched top and set with a finely sculpted gilt figural grouping of the Theological Virtues, Faith Hope and Charity depicted as three female figures atop a scrolled bracket and tiered shelf with sunburst concave reserve above the hinged lidded water font below. Height 15.25 inches x 10.75 inches (38.5 x 27.5cm).
Estimate:  $300 - 500
Price Realized: $375.00

Allegorically, the three theological virtues are represented here as such, Faith the figure holding the Cross, Hope the figure holding the chalice and Charity the figure holding the child. Unlike the cardinal virtues, which can be practiced by anyone, the theological virtues are gifts of grace from God, and the object of the virtues—what the practice of the virtue aims at—is God Himself.
