A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL, CIRCA 1800. In this popular type, based on the book of Revelations, Michael is depicted as the Chief Captain of the heavenly armies. He wears a crown and rides upon a red winged horse. A rainbow extends over his head, a long trumpet extends from his mouth, he holds a censor and in the same hand a lance plunges into Satan, who has fallen into the abyss depicted below. At upper left is Christ Emmanuel before the Hetimasia, the prepared altar which is also the symbolic throne of Christ. 29.75 inches x 25.5 inches (75.5 x 65 cm).
