A UNIQUE AND INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION WITH RELATED SCENES, 19TH CENTURY. At center, a carved, shaped recess inset with a cast silvered bronze figure of the crucified Christ. At top center, God the Father, on the left the three Marys, on the right, John the Apostle and the Roman Centurion Longinus. Immediately below the crucified Christ, the removal from the cross and the placement in the tomb. In the lower left corner, an inset icon of the venerable Ephraim of Novotorzhersk in front of his monastery and with another saint, and in the lower right corner a inset icon of the three handed Mother of God. Overlaid with a repoussé brass riza. Such icons were often created by incorporating various devotional items gathered on pilgrimages or passed down through the family. 13.75 inches x 12.1 inches (35.2 x 30.5 cm).
