Lot 450
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE STARORUSKIA MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1846. Traditionally rendered, this Hodigetria variant first appeared in the year 1578 near Novgorod. The lower margin inscribed in Old Church Slavonic, "The image of the Most Holy Mother of God Starorusskia." Overlaid with a silver repoussé and chased riza (sans halo), hallmarked St. Petersburg, dated 1846, indistinguishable maker’s mark and 84 silver standard. Interestingly, the silversmith who crafted the riza, accidentally left out the letter "S" from the beginning of the title "S"tarorusskia- thereby spelling instead "Tarorusskia." The verso also covered in velvet. 5 inches x 3.9 inches (12.7 x 9.8 cm).
