A RUSSIAN SILVER ICON LAMPADA, PURPORTEDLY GIFTED BY EMPRESS ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA TO ENGLISH TUTOR CHARLES SYDNEY GIBBES (1876-1963). Comprising a silver open work icon lampada with suspension chain and smoke bell hallmarked Moscow circa 1890, Cyrillic makers mark DM and 84 silver standard, overall length including chain 21 inches (53 cm). Together with a 19th century Russian silver plated brass icon lampada and chain. Accompanied by a hand written letter from George Paveliev Gibbes (the adoptive son of Charles Gibbes), dated 1989 to a Mr. Mansfield stating that the silver icon lampada was a gift from the Empress to his father and enclosed was a black and white photograph of his father who became a Russian Orthodox monk taking the name of Nicholas in honor of Tsar Nicholas II. Also included is a copy of the book The Romanovs & Mr. Gibbes, Frances Welch, 2002.

Charles Sydney Gibbes was a British academic who from 1908 to 1917 served as the English tutor to the children of Emperor Nichoals II. When Nicholas abdicated the throne in 1917 Gibbes voluntarily accompanied the Imperial family into exile to the Siberian village of Tobolsk. After the family was murdered in 1918 Gibbes returned to the UK and eventually became an Orthodox monk. He died in 1963.
