Malyshev studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1871-1876) and exhibited with the Itinerants from 1882-1891 (exhibitions 10, 16, 17, 18, 19). In 1877 he went to the Russian-Turkish war and took part in fighting as well as producing battle scene paintings.
